If Death Occurs At Home
Telephone the GP surgery if death occurs between 8am and 6.30pm outside of this time contact 111 who will visit to confirm that death has taken place.
Contact a funeral director.
Medical Certificate of Death if provided by the GP and it will be e-mailed to the Medical Examiner (since 9 September 2024) who will agree or disagree with a cause of death and act accordingly i.e. advise GP to e-mail Medical Cause of Death to the local registry office or referr the case to Essex Coroners.
We will inform you once Medical Certificate of Death has been sent to the registry office. To book an appointment to register a death please visit Essex County Council Website.
The Registrar will normally issue a Green coloured certificate for you to give to your funeral director who will look after necessary arrangements for the funeral. The Registrar will also issue a white notification certificate for the DSS. They will also enquire as to the number of Certified Copies you require for dealing with the deceased finances (a fee is payable for each copy).
If The Death Occurs In Hospital
Contact a funeral director to inform him his services are required.
Collect the certificate from the hospital then follow 4 to 5 as above
